Dr. John Samani is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and founder and sole owner of the Institute For Athletic Medicine, an orthopedics and sports medicine-based practice in Auburn Hills, Michigan. He founded the practice in 2000.
Dr. Samani graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1986 and then received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1990. After five years of specialized orthopedic training, he completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Vermont in 1995, followed by a fellowship at the Minneapolis Sports Medicine Center in 1996 and 1997. During his fellowship, he became specialty trained in sports medicine utilizing arthroscopic and reconstructive techniques of the knee, shoulder, elbow and ankle. While in Minneapolis, Dr. Samani enjoyed the privilege of working with athletes at the highest level including the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Timberwolves professional sports organizations. He also provided care to the men’s and women’s athletic teams at the University of Minnesota of the Big Ten conference.
Since his graduation from fellowship, he has been fortunate enough to provide care to adolescent, high school, collegiate, and professional athletes from all over the state of Michigan and the Midwest. One of his greatest experiences and joys in his professional life has been providing orthopedic and sports medicine care to Clarkston High School athletics for over twenty years. Dr. Samani continues to proudly serve as the team physician for Clarkston athletics men’s and women’s teams.
Dr. Samani has gained extensive experience in teaching his craft as well as practicing it. Throughout his career, he has provided instruction to medical students, orthopedic surgical residents, and orthopedic surgeons. He has often hosted lectures and clinics for other medical professionals in the state of Michigan and nationally. Dr. Samani has served as the director of the Michigan Knee and Shoulder Fellowship program, which supports the training of orthopedic surgeons through an additional year of specialized practice in sports medicine and arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery.
Dr. Samani continues to be active in researching and training in cutting edge technologies and orthobiologics so that he may provide his patients with the most comprehensive treatment options and the latest improvements in orthopedic care. He has authored a series of articles in publications including “The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and The Journal of Hand Surgery”. He also authored a chapter on acromioclavicular joint injuries in sports that appeared in the textbook “The Upper Extremity in Sports Medicine”.
Dr. Samani is a proud member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Michigan Orthopedic Society, as well as the Michigan Medical Society and Michigan Athletic Trainers Society. He also is a proud member of the Fischbone Society, which consists of the orthopedic surgeons who continue to provide care to the Minnesota Vikings, the Minnesota Twins, the Minnesota Wild, and the Minnesota Timberwolves professional sports organizations. Dr. Samani has achieved the highest level of certification in his field by training for and receiving a Certificate of Added Qualification in the field of Orthopedic Sports Medicine.
Dr. Samani and his wife of 31 years, Miriam, are the proud parents of four children, all of whom have enjoyed the privilege of participating in high school and club sports as student athletes. As such, Dr. Samani understands the demands that athletics places on the student athlete and professional athlete alike. He has gained invaluable insight on how to deal with the delicate balance between treating an athlete’s injury and return to sport, and how it not only affects the individual athlete, but their family, teammates and coaching staffs as well. Sports medicine and treating athletes of all ages is his passion.
